A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and legal charges
Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.
Trial details and international connections
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.
Historical background and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.
The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
