Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
