The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills through this clever supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. The Black Phone
The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the youth anxious. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates the worst. However, the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, early morning, Film4
